Build Your Own Terraria World
Episode 5: Biomes & Rules

A biome is not painted on a map. The game counts the blocks around you and decides where you are. Once you know the rule, you can invent your own places: a desert, a snowfield, a jungle.

Ember says: here is the secret of biomes: it is just a rule. Put enough of the right blocks in one place and the game does the rest. If it does not work, your blocks were too few or too far apart.
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ
Try it right here: paint a patch of sand or snow. Enough sand reads as a Desert, enough snow as a Snow biome. This is the real Terraria World Studio, live in this page. Open it full size โ†’

What a Biome Really Is
A region counted from the blocks around it
Active
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Understand a biome as a count of the blocks near your player.

  • 1A biome is a region of the world with its own look, its own music and its own enemies.
  • 2The game does not draw biomes on a map. It counts the blocks around your player.
  • 3Pile up a lot of sand in one area and the game decides you are in a Desert.
  • 4So a biome is really a rule: enough of the right blocks, close enough together.

Goal for this step

Learn which blocks make which biome.

  • 1Each biome needs a lot of its own blocks in one area before it appears.
  • 2Lots of sand makes a Desert. Snow and ice make a Snow biome.
  • 3Jungle grass and mud make a Jungle. Corrupt and crimson blocks grow their own biomes.
  • 4The blocks have to be close together. A few tiles dotted far apart will not count.

Goal for this step

Paint a patch of biome blocks big enough to count.

  • 1In TEdit, pick the block you need, like snow, ice or sand.
  • 2Paint a patch of it along the surface, wide and thick enough to count.
  • 3One or two tiles is not a patch. Aim for about a room-sized block of it.
  • 4Keep the patch together, not dotted around, so the count really adds up.

Goal for this step

Confirm your biome by its look and its sound.

  • 1Save the world in TEdit, then load it back in the game.
  • 2Walk into your patch. The background changes to match the biome.
  • 3The music changes too. Each biome has its own tune.
  • 4If the sight and the sound change, your biome is working.

Biome Size and Boundaries
A few tiles is not enough
Locked
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Learn how size and edges decide whether a biome shows up.

  • 1A biome needs enough blocks to cross a hidden threshold. A few tiles will not do it.
  • 2The bigger the area, the more reliably the biome triggers.
  • 3Biomes have soft edges. The change happens gradually as you walk in.
  • 4If two patches sit close together they can blend, so leave room between different biomes.

Goal for this step

Fix a biome that stays stubbornly plain.

  • 1If nothing changes, check you painted the right block. The wrong block does nothing.
  • 2Make sure the blocks are dense enough and close together, not scattered.
  • 3Check the blocks are somewhere that counts, not buried far out of reach.
  • 4Save, reload the world, then walk in again to test. Repeat until it works.
