Build Your Own Terraria World Episode 4: Walls & Layers
Every space in Terraria has two layers: the tile you stand on and the wall behind it. Once you can tell them apart, you can build a room that keeps the dark and the enemies out.
Ember says: walls are the quiet hero of building. They do not block you, but they turn an empty hole into a real room where nothing nasty spawns. Get this layer right and everything you build later feels safe.
๐ ๏ธ
Try it right here: turn on Wall mode and paint behind a tile, so the second layer becomes obvious. This is the real Terraria World Studio, live in this page. Open it full size โ

Two Layers
The tile you stand on, and the wall behind
Active
๐ฏ
Goal for this step
See a world as a front layer and a back layer, stacked on every square.
1The foreground is the tile you can stand on or bump into: grass, dirt, stone, wood.
2The background wall sits behind that tile. It does not block you at all, you walk straight past it.
3The wall is what makes a space count as a room, and it is what stops enemies spawning inside.
4Every square can hold one foreground tile and one background wall, neatly stacked.

Placing Walls in TEdit
Switch to the wall brush
Locked
๐ฏ
Goal for this step
Learn the wall brush, the tool that paints the back layer.
1In TEdit you have two brushes: one for foreground tiles and one for walls.
2Switch to the wall brush to paint the layer behind the tiles.
3A wall can sit behind a solid tile too. You will not see it until you dig that tile away.
4This is just like the Wall mode button in the browser Studio, so try it there first if you like.

Make a Safe Room
Walls keep enemies out
Locked
๐ฏ
Goal for this step
Turn an empty space into a safe room by filling it with walls.
1Dig out a small room, a few tiles wide and tall, down in the ground.
2Switch to the wall brush and fill the whole room with walls, floor to ceiling.
3Every open square needs a wall. One bare square is enough for an enemy to sneak in.
4Drop in a torch and a door, and you have a safe little room to call home.

Natural Walls Underground
Dirt and stone walls already there
Locked
๐ฏ
Goal for this step
Understand the natural walls the world already placed for you.
1Underground, the game already places natural walls: dirt walls near the top and stone walls deeper down.
2These natural walls are why most caves do not spawn enemies on every single tile.
3You can place a natural wall yourself by picking dirt wall or stone wall with the wall brush.
4Natural walls look rougher than crafted walls, so you can always tell them apart.

Common Wall Mistakes
Missing walls, or walls you did not want
Locked
๐ฏ
Goal for this step
Spot the two wall mistakes and know how to fix each one.
1Mistake one: a missing wall. One bare square and enemies can spawn right inside your room.
2Mistake two: walls where you do want enemies. An enemy farm needs open squares with no walls.
3To fix a missing wall, switch to the wall brush and fill that bare square.
4To let enemies spawn on purpose, remove the wall with the eraser and leave the square bare.

Layers and Depth
Surface rooms vs underground rooms
Locked
๐ฏ
Goal for this step
Use depth to decide where a room belongs and how it should feel.
1The surface is the top layer of the world, where you spawn and can see the sky.
2Underground rooms sit below the surface, tucked inside dirt and stone.
3Surface rooms feel bright and open. Underground rooms feel cosy and safe.
4Plan for the depth: big windows up top, tight walls and lamps down below.

You Understand Walls & Layers!
You can tell the front tile from the back wall, place walls in TEdit, and build a room that keeps the dark and the enemies out. Episode 5 shows how the blocks around a place turn it into a biome.
