Starter pack: the ready-to-use world plan and README for the series are in terraria-world-starter.zip. The plan has space for your design notes.

Ember says: good design is a lot of small kind choices. Ask "who is this for and what do they do here?" before you place a single block, and the world designs itself.

Try it right here: sketch and move pieces around before you commit the idea to a world. This is the real Terraria World Studio, live in this page. Open it full size โ†’

Give Every Place a Purpose
Decide what each area is for
Active
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Decide the job of each place before you build it.

  • 1Every good place has a purpose. A home, a shop, a boss arena and a garden all do different jobs.
  • 2Make a quick plan on paper or in the Studio: list your places and write one job next to each.
  • 3If you cannot say what a place is for, you probably do not need it yet.
  • 4Purpose first turns a pile of blocks into a world that makes sense.

Guide with Paths
Lead the player naturally
Locked
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Use paths so players always know where to go next.

  • 1Good paths do the guiding for you. Players follow roads, rails and light without being told.
  • 2Make the way forward obvious and the dead ends less tempting.
  • 3Use a few simple tricks: brighter torches, a wider road and a landmark on the horizon.
  • 4Walk your own paths and see if they guide you without thinking.

Order the Flow
Let difficulty rise as players go
Locked
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Order your areas so the challenge grows.

  • 1Flow is the order a player meets your areas. Start gentle and let the difficulty rise.
  • 2Put the safe places near the start and the dangerous ones further out.
  • 3Each big fight should feel like the next step up, not a sudden wall.
  • 4Walk your world in order and check the ramp feels fair and fun.

Balance Risk and Reward
Reward effort, keep danger fair
Locked
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Make the world feel fair to play.

  • 1Players should get something for their effort. Put a reward where the danger is highest.
  • 2Keep the danger fair. A trap is fine if a careful player can spot it.
  • 3Give a short warning before the hard bits: a sign, a skull, a change in the music.
  • 4If a place feels just mean, soften it. Fair worlds are the ones people replay.

Decorate with Intent
Detail that helps, not clutter
Locked
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Add detail that helps the player, not noise.

  • 1Decorate with intent. Each detail should have a reason: show the way, set the mood or hint at danger.
  • 2Too much at once becomes clutter. If it hides the path, it is too much.
  • 3Leave empty space. Quiet rooms make the busy ones feel stronger.
  • 4Step back often. Detail should reward a closer look, not fight for attention.
