Design Like a Maker
Episode 12: Design Your World

Anyone can place tiles. This episode is about why you place them where you do: giving a place a purpose, guiding the player, and making it feel finished. It works in the Mod Studio and in any game you build.

Ember says: design is just decisions with reasons. Every choice you make should answer a question like "what is this place for?" or "where will the player look first?". Let's practise those decisions in the Studio.

Start With a Purpose
What is this place for?
Active
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Decide the purpose and mood before you paint a single tile.

  • 1Write one sentence: "This place is for ___ and should feel ___."
  • 2For example: "a quiet reading garden that feels calm".
  • 3Your purpose decides the tiles: a calm place uses water, soft paths and few bright objects.
  • 4Paint the ground first on the Back layer to match that mood.

Guide the Eye
Paths and one focal point
Locked
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Use a path to lead the player and one focal point to look at.

  • 1Lay a path from the entrance to the heart of the place. The path is a quiet instruction: "come this way".
  • 2Add one focal point: a big tree, a pond, a building. The eye should land somewhere.
  • 3Don't give the eye ten things to look at. One clear focal point beats five busy ones.
  • 4Use the Studio's Rect and Fill tools to lay paths fast, then decorate.

Keep the Flow
Never trap the player
Locked
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Check that every space connects and nothing traps the player.

  • 1Flow is how easy it is to move around. A good place has clear routes, not dead ends.
  • 2Play-test and try to get stuck. If you can, fix it with the tile rules or by moving a wall.
  • 3Leave a gap of at least one tile between solid objects so the player can slip through.
  • 4Connect your area to the rest of the map with a path or a warp, so it is part of the world.

Balance and Detail
Space to breathe, then a signature touch
Locked
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Leave open space, then add details that feel placed, not scattered.

  • 1Balance: leave some open ground. Empty space is not wasted, it makes the details stand out.
  • 2Group details in odd numbers (3 flowers, not 2 or 4). It looks more natural.
  • 3Add one signature detail that says "I made this": a special statue, a colour, a little camp.
  • 4Use layer toggles in the Studio to check each layer on its own, so nothing is buried by mistake.

Test Like a Player
Walk it and fix the boring bits
Locked
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Play your world and fix what does not work.

  • 1Play your world. Walk the path you made. Did it lead somewhere worth going?
  • 2Try to get lost or stuck. A real player will do exactly that.
  • 3Find one boring or empty part and add a detail or a reason to visit.
  • 4Fix one thing, then play again. Design is testing and improving, not one perfect pass.

The Design Checklist
Finish and claim the badge
Locked
๐ŸŽฏ
Goal for this step

Run the checklist on your world, then finish the series.

  • 1Purpose: can you say what this place is for in one sentence?
  • 2Guide: is there a path, and one clear thing to look at?
  • 3Flow: can the player move around without getting stuck?
  • 4Balance & detail: open space, grouped details, one signature touch?
  • 5If all four are yes, you have designed a world, not just filled a grid. Finish every episode for the Farm Architect badge.
