Scratch Studio
Build a Scratch game right here, play it, then take it into Scratch for real. Pick a game, set up the sprites and values, and when you are happy, download a real Scratch project file (.sb3) you can open on scratch.mit.edu or in the offline editor.
Companion to the My First Scratch Game series. Nothing to install here, it works on a school computer.
Sprite
A character or object, like the cat or an apple. Each one has its own blocks.
Variable
A box that holds a value, like Score. The studio adds one for you.
Stage
The background and the code that runs for the whole project.
Place it on the stage
Drag the cat where it should start, or focus the stage and use Left and Right arrows then Enter. The start spot saves into your .sb3.
Cat starts centre stage. Drag it and press Play.
Your blocks
These are the Scratch blocks the studio builds for you. Each colour is a different block type, just like in Scratch. Read them, or rebuild them by hand in Scratch.
Code it live
These lines are the same numbers in your blocks. Change one, press Apply, and the preview updates.
Play your game
This is a preview of the game the blocks make. Export it to open the real thing in Scratch.
Take it into Scratch
This downloads a real Scratch project file (.sb3) with your sprites, costumes and blocks already in place.
How to open it in Scratch
- Go to scratch.mit.edu and sign in (or open the offline Scratch editor).
- Click Create, then File menu, then Load from your computer.
- Pick the .sb3 file you downloaded. Your game opens with all the sprites and blocks.
- Press the green flag and play. Change anything you like, it is yours now.
No Scratch account yet? You can still read the blocks guide and build it yourself in Scratch for free.
